The OSCE’s Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) should observe the forthcoming early elections in Serbia in full capacity, including analysts and long- and short-term observers, it was assessed on Oct. 26 in the latest report of the Needs Assessment Mission (ODIHR NAM).
According to Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, the elections will be scheduled next week for Dec. 17. Many members of the Mission have stressed the importance of long-term presence throughout Serbia, in order to cover all aspects of the election process, it was stated in the recommendations and conclusions of the report.
It was pointed out that it was particularly important that the assessment be unbiased, due to the current high level of political and social polarization in Serbia, because that would contribute to greater public trust in the election process and potentially serve as a deterrent against tampering on election day.
In the report, the Mission listed a series of aspects that deserve further focus of the observer activities of ODIHR, such as campaigning, media monitoring, campaign financing, solving election disputes and election day procedures, as well as the possible voter coercion and misuse of state resources.
