Rising Tensions on Serbia’s Political Stage

Political tension in Serbia got a new upswing over the weekend of May 9-10, when independent MP Miladin Sevarlic went on a hunger strike on the stairs in front of the Serbian parliament, only to immediately be joined by Dveri movement leader Bosko Obradovic. An hour later, MPs of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party, Aleksandar Martinovic and Sandra Bozic, opted for the same kind of strike. Each of them had their own motives and demands. They sat on the stairs at a good distance from each other, while supporters approached them to voice their support directly or stood further away on the street and shouted slogans of support. Martinovic and Bozic sat on chairs, Sevarlic was dressed in traditional Serbian garments, while Obradovic sat on a small pillow a female supporter had brought him when he started the strike.
