The Kosovo government last week submitted its application for membership in the Council of Europe, for which it had secured the support of leading Western countries. The Serbian authorities, led by President Aleksandar Vucic, have accused Pristina of violating the so-called Washington Agreement made in September 2020 with this act and announced continued activities toward derecognition of Kosovo’s independence as a countermeasure. Vucic has presented Pristina’s application as a move against Serbia, even though it could actually benefit to an extent from Kosovo’s membership in the Council of Europe.
