A Dangerous Precedent

A relatively stable political situation in North Macedonia has been marred by a recent French proposal to lift Bulgaria’s veto on the European Union’s decision to open accession negotiations with Skopje. The French idea, which after a diplomatic campaign was supported by the government in Skopje and Albanian opposition parliamentary parties, has been criticized by the opposition and North Macedonia’s citizens, being perceived as actually “Bulgarianizating” the country, while not offering a true beginning of the talks.
