Roadblock in Smederevo (BetaPhoto/Stefan Zivanovic)
The mass protest in Belgrade on June 28, the “mobile dispersed blockades” that followed over the arrests of demonstrators and the authorities’ decision to interrupt them violently (in places even brutally) have pushed Serbia into an even deeper political and social crisis. The escalation of the crisis over the last few days shows that the rebellion could flare further and that the chances of it being snuffed out are practically non-existent. What particularly contributes to that is the behavior of the regime led by Aleksandar Vucic, which has opted for numerous repressive measures in a bid to stamp out the uprising.
