The first day of a new school year in Serbia showed that the rebellion of university and high school students and the citizens who support them is still very much alive. This week’s mass protests indicate that the uprising may reach its peak on Nov. 1, on the anniversary of the Novi Sad train station canopy collapse. Calling an election, which would be held before the end of the year, currently seems like the only way the Aleksandar Vucic-led regime can prevent further escalation, but probably only temporarily.
