After months of a hardline stance that there will be no elections before December 2026, backed by the argument that an early election would not be in the interest of the state, President Aleksandar Vucic last week indicated that citizens may go to the polls already in the spring. Ahead of the elections, Vucic wants to eliminate the possibility of parts of the state apparatus becoming disobedient, which is why he is replacing professionals on the police force with “loyalists.”
