Although that was already crystal clear earlier, the U.S. last week told the authorities in Belgrade in writing that Russian ownership of oil company Naftna Industrija Srbije (NIS) must be annulled for the company to continue doing business. An announcement was made soon thereafter that the Russians had agreed to sell their stake in NIS, but not to whom, and who the buyer is will determine the U.S. stance. Given that a solution has not been reached yet, Serbia is facing yet another great danger – secondary U.S. sanctions, which could affect all banks in the country.
