On April 5 the Serbian authorities claimed that they had thwarted an attempt at sabotaging the Balkan Stream gas pipeline near the border with Hungary. Both analysts and representatives of the opposition in both countries agree that this was a false flag operation for the purpose of bolstering Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s position ahead of an uncertain parliamentary election in which he could lose power. It is not, however, clear who participated in the operation and what the role of the Aleksandar Vucic authorities was.
