The Venice Commission’s opinion on the recent amendments to five judicial laws in Serbia, which it unveiled last week, confirmed the negative assessments made by representatives of the professional public in the country. The Venice Commission de facto concluded that those laws deviate from the Constitution and the laws passed in 2022 and violate the autonomy of prosecution and independence of the judiciary. The elimination of all consequences of those laws is a prerequisite for Serbia to make any headway on the European path, but the Aleksandar Vucic-led regime will probably try to stall it.
