French President’s Visit to Serbia: Waiting for Compromise with Kosovo

The European Union cannot expand until it is reformed, but that does not mean its doors are closed to Serbia and that France will not help and support it on that path, primarily in reaching a compromise on Kosovo. That is the key message French President Emmanuel Macron conveyed to his Serbian counterpart Aleksandar Vucic, with whom he talked during a two-day visit to Belgrade on July 15-16.

Macron is the first French president to come to Serbia after Jacques Chirac, in 2001, with the aim of, according to announcements from Paris, restore the weakened ties with Serbia and strengthen France’s presence in the region. Serbia attributed the visit enormous importance, describing it in advance as historic for the two countries’ relations. Belgrade’s expectations first and foremost pertained to Paris’ support as regards Kosovo and progress in European integration.
