The ruling Serbian Progressive Party is speeding up preparations for a regular general election this coming spring, ignoring a decision by the biggest opposition parties to boycott said election. The Progressives and their leader, Aleksandar Vucic, have tried to get the opposition to drop its plans for a boycott, but were not ready – in the past more than six months of attempts at establishing an effective dialogue on election conditions – to offer concessions that would motivate their political opponents to take part in the vote. Thus the next election, as it stands, will be marked by a radical polarization within Serbian society and an increase in tensions.
