Kosovo President Hashim Thaci announced on March 18 that he had signed a decree declaring a state of emergency for the entire Kosovo due to the coronavirus epidemic.

“Based on my constitutional powers as president and after a meeting of the Kosovo Security Council on March 17, I have signed a decree declaring the state of emergency due to the situation caused by the appearance of COVID-19,” Thaci said via Twitter.

Thaci revealed his intention to declare the state of emergency in the evening on March 17, at a press conference organized after the Council’s meeting.

Immediately after his announcement, however, the Kosovo Cabinet reacted.

Kosovo Deputy Premier Haki Abazi said that Premier Albin Kurti does not agree with the president’s stance over the state of emergency and that he had informed Thaci about that during the Council’s meeting.

A decision to introduce a state of emergency is passed by the Kosovo Assembly, with a two-thirds majority. During the state of emergency, the Kosovo Security Council is headed by the Kosovo President.

So far, 19 persons have been infected with coronavirus in Kosovo.
