On the occasion of April 22, National Holocaust Remembrance Day marking also the genocide committed against the Serbs, Roma and Jews during World War II, the New Party said that one of the most horrendous crimes in modern history of the world should never be forgotten.

“We should remember the crimes and respect the victims so that they would never happen again; that is a message we must sent to the future generations across the world,” the party announced.

“It is appalling that Staro Sajmiste (Old Fairgrounds), the biggest camp in Serbia in which Jews were tortured and murdered is in a horrible shape, and it is inadmissible that at the place where during the 1940s hospitals and cells had been located, we today have homes, businesses and restaurants,” the announcement further said.

The party added that the condition of Staro Sajmiste is a shame of Belgrade and Serbia, and urged the city administration and the Ministry of Culture to commit themselves to this monument and finally complete a memorial center the victims deserve instead of being photographed laying wreaths there once a year.

The announcement also recalled that April 22 in Serbia is also dedicated to all the victims of the Second World War, but most of all to a group of inmates of the Jasenovac death camp, which on this day in 1945 tried to escape.
