Speaking before the parliament on April 28, Prime Minister Ana Brnabic said that Serbia had imposed the measures that were timely, smart and fit for purpose, demonstrating a responsible state policy endorsing recommendations by medical experts and managing managed to prevent exponential coronavirus infection growth.

“Since the beginning, we had two goals: firstly, to protect our healthy health system, and secondly, to protect the lives of the oldest fellow citizens and the patients with chronic diseases,” Brnabic told a first parliament session held since the declaration of the state of emergency.

Comparing the situation in Serbia with those in the countries most hit by the virus, such as Italy and Spain, Brnabic recalled that Serbia had banned gatherings and shut down schools and borders before reporting a first death related to COVID-19, while other countries had done the same only 12 or 15 into a first death case, which had provoked grave consequences.

She thanked the EU, China, Russia, the UAE, and all the others who had deployed aid, extending special thanks to health workers and the crisis team. Brnabic also underlined that the state “spared no resource to protect the citizens.”
