Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic talked on May 6 with President of the European Council Charles Michel, who conveyed to him the European Union's dedication to an enlargement perspective for the Western Balkans, while stepping up its support to political, economic and social reforms in the region.

The Office of the President of Serbia reported that Vucic had talked with Michel just hours ahead of an EU-Western Balkans video conference. The Serbian president thanked for the Union's considerable assistance to the citizens of Serbia, while Michel underlined the solidarity Serbia had demonstrated by sending medical aid to Italy and assisting the Western Balkans.

The EU official recalled that the EU had allocated EUR3.3 billion to support the region, having in mind the consequences of the coronavirus pandemic on regional  economies.

Vucic and Michel also discussed next steps on Serbia's path to the Union. President Vucic said that Serbia continued the reform process with a view to joining the EU. The two also discussed the situation in the region, underlining Serbia's commitment to a policy of peace and cooperation in the Western Balkans, the Office went on to say in a press release.
