Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said on July 26 that in fighting the coronavirus the authorities in Serbia were not waging a political battle, but rather "a fight for human lives and health."

In a comment on criticism from part of the opposition that the government's Crisis Headquarters was under-reporting fatality ratios and new infections, President Vucic said that "when someone expects a contagious disease to be their political ally, it speaks volumes about them."

"It is hard for them to say that Serbia lacks hospitals and equipment, because everything is different now compared to their era. They can't say that Serbia is missing ventilators either, which is why they are attacking the Crisis Headquarters for allegedly hiding things. If you test 1,000 people a day you can hide your dead and sick, but if you test 12,000, like Serbia does, you really can't," Vucic said, repeating that Serbia possesses "more than enough" ventilators, which, he said, were being delivered to the hospitals that needed them on a daily basis.

The president added that the latest opinion polls showed that the opposition parties criticizing the Crisis Headquarters and the government's actions now had less than 4.5 percent support.
