People who consider themselves lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT) live in an absurd situation in Serbia, as their prime minister belongs to the LGBT community, but her "position of privilege" extinguishes every need to support it, an activists of To Be Clear (Da se zna) organization, Stefan Sparavalo, said on Oct. 19.

At a press conference held to present recommendations as to the state of human rights in the LGBT context, Sparavalo explained that neither the LGBT prime minister nor the Serbian Pride March could be valid indicators of the position of LGBT people in Serbia, but that one should rather pay attention to the number of attacks against them, the way the police handled them and how many times the legal definition of those was hate crime.

A lawyer at the Belgrade Human Rights Center, Vuk Raicevic, said that the Prohibition of Discrimination Act had to be amended urgently to protect the LGBT community, suggesting that hate crime clauses of the Criminal Code had to be fully implemented as well. Raicevic recalled that the law was passed in 2012, but remained a dead letter.
