Matthew Palmer, deputy assistant secretary in the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs with responsibility for the Western Balkans and the Aegean, in Pristina on June 1 said that the dialogue on normalization of relations between Kosovo and Serbia should be finalized with a mutual recognition, while the EU special representative for the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue, Miroslav Lajcak, said that 2021 had the potential to be a good year for the relations between the EU and the Western Balkans.

Speaking at a news conference after meeting top Kosovo officials, Palmer and Lajcak said they had visited Kosovo to demonstrate transantlantic cooperation ahead of the June meeting between Kosovo Premier Albin Kurti and Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic.

Palmer said that the main objective of the dialogue was a mutual recognition and the countries’ steps towards their respective EU membership. He reiterated that the U.S. was a partner in the process and that “the vision of the region is improving the dialogue towards reaching a final agreement.”

Lajcak said that a meeting between Kosovo and Serbia would be held in Brussels in a few days, adding that the primary purpose of the visit to Kosovo was to prepare for a first meeting with Kurti and Vucic, scheduled to take place in a few days.
