Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic announced in Belgrade late on Feb. 2 that he had spoken with the EU and U.S. envoys for the Western Balkans regarding matters central to the sustainable future and stability of the region.

According to a statement issued by the President's Office, Vucic met separately with Gabriel Escobar, the U.S. deputy assistant secretary of state for European affairs, and with Miroslav Lajcak, the Union's special representative for the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue. Both discussions pertained to further steps in the negotiations between Serbia proper and Kosovo, key issues in regional stability as well as "the economic progress of Serbia and the Western Balkans," the press release said.

Escobar and Lajcak have themselves already made statements on their support for the continuation of constructive talks between Belgrade and Pristina -- and for the integration of the Western Balkans into the European Union, which, they recalled, hinges upon both sides in the dialogue fulfilling what they have agreed upon so far. According to Lajcak, the EU and U.S. are closely cooperating on a shared vision for the dialogue process and future of the region.

Vucic thanked Escobar and Lajcak for their personal dedication to furthering negotiations with Pristina and underlined that Serbia respects their efforts toward stabilizing the region. He also commended both officials on their pragmatic approach and commitment, which, he said, lends an atmosphere of neutrality to the negotiations process.
