The Democratic Party warned on Feb. 7 that economic inequalities in Serbia were intolerably deep, finding the authorities responsible.

The party has noted that the Government of Serbia “set a humiliatingly low poverty line, failing not only to eliminate poverty, but to sustain mere existence as well.” The Democrats went on to say in a press release that “what makes the social misery worse is that a large number of people whose income is below the poverty threshold, as low as it is, do not receive any financial compensation whatsoever.”

The chair of the Democratic Party’s committee on corruption and organized crime, Danilo Sukovic, said that the public “has been exposed to an avalanche of laughable reports of enormous economic growth rates,” whereas “the brutal picture of social stratification remains hidden from the eyes of Serbian citizens.”

“Even if it exists, only a very thin layer of the ultra-rich siting at the top of the wealth pyramid can benefit from economic growth, while the poor get poorer and the gulf widens between the poor and the rich,” Sukovic said.
