Serbian Chamber of Commerce President Marko Cadez said on March 30 that the Serbian government has accepted the majority of measures proposed by the Chamber, and that it is important to implement them as soon as possible.

“The package of anti-crisis measures during the state of emergency declared because of the coronavirus epidemic, which will be presented tomorrow, will ensure that small and medium-sized enterprises remain the pillars of the Serbian economy,” said Cadez in an interview for Prva TV.

Among significant measures, according to him, are the government loan guarantees for small and medium-sized enterprises, corporate bonds that will be issued by larger businesses, and a three-month deferral of tax and payroll contributions.

The number of lay-offs during the epidemic has been low, the Chamber’s president said, adding that “the larger companies that had suspended their production have sent their workers on paid leave.”

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic announced in the evening on March 29, that EUR5 billion will be allocated for the package of measures intended to assist the country’s economy. The state can afford to set aside this sum for the businesses, the president explained, because the state finances are in good shape and because of the budget reserve, but added that Serbia will have to borrow from domestic and international lenders.
