An Unexpected Turn

Predrag Milovanovic, a member of the High Prosecutorial Council, faced strong criticism and a series of accusations last week for having abstained from voting at the body’s session, thus preventing key prosecutors from staying in the Office of the Prosecutor for Organized Crime. Milovanovic, who over the years had been regarded as an independent prosecutor committed to law and justice, effectively “played” in favor of Aleksandar Vucic’s government with that move. The authorities have been seeking to rein in the Office in order to halt investigations that could compromise them.
