Fanning the Flames

Last week theologian Milos Stojkovic found himself in the limelight for saying that the father and brother of Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic are to be credited with the recent arrival of the Belt of the Most Holy Mother of God in Belgrade and that the state donated EUR1 million to the Vatopedi monastery on the occasion. Despite the impression that this was not his intention, Stojkovic’s thoughtless statement kicked up a public storm given that he imparted this already sensitive and socially divisive issue with a political dimension.
