World-renowned geneticist Miodrag Stojkovic’s decision to leave Serbia can be seen as a metaphor for the dominant influence of politics and political parties on professionals in Serbia.

Stojkovic, who is also the owner of a hospital for treating sterility in Leskovac (southern Serbia, started in 2008), left for Harvard around mid-year, where he will head a team for stem cell research.

The special hospital in Leskovac is run by him, his wife and associate Petra, and their friend from school, physician Nebojsa Markovic. In the past 10 years, they have helped bring 800 babies into the world.

Stojkovic left Serbia, as he put it, because “I hunger for science and communication with people who will not scowl at me for rooting for others.”
