Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic stated on Feb. 20 that the European Union was investing a large sum of money, EUR16.5 million, in the development of eastern Serbia and that even more money would be designated from the republic budget for building the road infrastructure in that part of the country.

"We always find reasons to criticize the EU, but this time we thank them for the large sum of money they are investing in tourism in eastern Serbia, from Felix Romuliana to the Rajac Pivnice," Vucic said at the International Tourism Fair in Belgrade, on the stand of "Donje Podunavlje" (Lower Danube), where the start of realization of the project "EU For Cultural Heritage and Tourism" was marked. The project is being financed by the EU, together with the German government, and carried out by the German Organization for International Cooperation (GIZ).

Vucic said he hoped the EU would continue with similar projects for other parts of Serbia, adding that he called on the people to return from foreign countries and help the development of tourism in that part of Serbia with their knowledge.

The chief of the EU Delegation in Serbia, Sem Fabrizi, stated that the EU and Serbia would work together on presenting eastern Serbia and the Danubian region to Europe. We are happy to be able to finance the project worth EUR16.5 million, 10 percent of which was secured by the German government and the rest by the EU, Fabrizi said.
