Serbian Defense Minister Aleksandar Vulin said on March 30 that no coronavirus cases have been registered among the migrant population in Serbia, adding that the 17 camps the migrants are stationed at are being secured by the military.

“They are not allowed to leave [the camps] without special permits, to go shopping or for medical treatments,” said Vulin for Pink TV, adding that in such cases they have to have an escort.

Because of the COVID-19 outbreak the movement of migrants is being strictly controlled so as to prevent them from mixing with the rest of the population, explained the defense minister.

Vulin said that the nine soldiers who got infected while on duty at the northerner border checkpoints are well and that he hopes they will recover soon.

“We have 642 soldiers in self-isolation as they have been in contact with the diseased, and their health is being monitored,” said Vulin. He added that some 30 patients with milder symptoms have been admitted to the temporary hospital at the Belgrade Fair and the discipline is military.

According to the Serbian Health Ministry’s report from March 29, 741 COVID-19 cases have so far been confirmed in Serbia, of which 13 have been fatal.
