Epidemiologist Predrag Kon has said that the COVID-19 epidemic is at its peak in Serbia and that what he still fears is “the sixth week,” underlining that [we] “should wait no longer.”

“If we are to introduce more drastic measures, now it the time to decide on that,” Kon told the April 8 issue of the daily Danas.

Asked for his personal opinion about the more rigorous restrictions, Kon answered that “in Belgrade, which is especially endangered, contacts between the citizens should be maximally reduced in every possible way.”

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said in the evening on April 7 that the introduction of a 24-hour quarantine should not be ruled out. Vucic told the RTS public service that a complete ban of movement would be introduced if medical experts propose that measure.

The president said that if the experts agree, a curfew lasting from Friday 3 p.m. until Monday 5 a.m. will be declared, adding that such a measure is very likely for Belgrade and Nis. He also said that he hopes the state of emergency will end in a month, i.e. “as soon as [the epidemic] no longer threatens the people’s health.”
