Serbian Foreign Minister Ivica Dacic has received a letter of appreciation from Austrian European and International Affairs Minister Alexander Schallenberg, the Serbian Foreign Ministry announced on April 16.

“The Covid-19 crisis is an unprecedented global challenge that requires strenuous efforts by us all on a bilateral, European as well as multilateral level. We Ministers of Foreign Affairs have to make sure that our citizens abroad who need to travel back can do so,” Schallenberg said in the letter.

The Austrian minister extended his gratitude to Serbia for giving the opportunity to 20 Austrian citizens, 16 Serbian citizens residing in Austria, and citizens of several EU member countries to return home on April 1, with an Air Serbia flight from Belgrade to Vienna.

According to Schallenberg, the support that the EU had given to Serbia over the past years, in particular to strengthen Serbia’s health system, is an important investment in Serbia’s capacities to cope with situations such as this one.

Austria had strongly supported further initiatives by the EU to extend concrete, significant assistance to all countries in the region that are affected with the Covid-19 crisis, the announcement further said.

“I am happy to see that the EU has announced a first comprehensive package of assistance, worth EUR93.4 million in donations, together with a number of key, non-financial assistance measures,” Schallenberg said and added that Austria will continue to stand by Serbia and the other countries of the region.
