Kosovo's acting deputy prime minister, Haki Abayzi, asked the U.S. president's special envoy for normalization talks between Serbia and Kosovo, Richard Grenell, why he had disrespected Kosovo and its democratically elected government.

Abazi, a deputy to Albin Kurti and a vice-president of the Self-Determination movement, reacted to Grenell's tweet that the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue might start  "in earnest" once a 100-percent tariff on Serbian products and reciprocity requirements had been dropped.

"The taxes have been dropped already. Kosovo's true leaders and representatives of the people were elected on Oct. 6, 2019. Why are you showing disrespect towards a democratic state and its government? In a democracy, leaders are chosen in an election, based on the votes of the people," Abazi tweeted.

Grenell reacted on April 19 to Kosovo President Hashim Thaci's tweet, saying, among other things, that the tariff and reciprocity requirements should be lifted to "strengthen the support of the United States and the European Union to Kosovo."

"Once tariffs/reciprocity are dropped, then the dialogue begins in earnest. I’ve spoken with leaders in Serbia and Kosovo to make clear they must start building confidence today in preparation - and they’ve committed to do so," Grenell said in the tweet.
