Belgrade has said it will not impose reciprocal measures against Montenegro following Podgorica’s decision not to open its borders for Serbian nationals.

Montenegrin Prime Minister Dusko Markovic on May 25 said that his country would open borders in early June for the countries which met the epidemiological criteria defined by the Public Health Institute, that is, the countries reporting 25 coronavirus cases per 100,000 inhabitants, which included Croatia, Slovenia, Austria, Germany, Hungary, Albania, and Greece.

His Serbian counterpart Ana Brnabic told TV Pink on May 25 that Belgrade would not close its borders for Montenegrin nationals, noting that “the real reasons” behind Podgorica’s decision to open its borders for some countries, but not for Serbia, were not the Covid-19 epidemic or the number of coronavirus cases.

Serbian Foreign Minister Ivica Dacic has described Podgorica’s decision to keep its borders closed for Serbian nationals as a senseless act, adding that for the time being Belgrade will not submit a letter of protest and that Serbian borders will remain open to Montenegrin nationals.
