Lavrov to Visit Serbia

On June 18, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will arrive on a working visit to Belgrade, where he will meet with President Aleksandar Vucic and Foreign Minister Ivica Dacic. Their talks will address the two countries’ political and economic cooperation, the situation in the Balkans and other current international issues, it has been announced in Moscow.

It is expected that one of the important topics during their meetings will be the question of Kosovo, which was also the subject of the June 15 telephone conversation between Vucic and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Moscow is advocating a compromise solution acceptable to Belgrade, which will have to be approved by the U.N. Security Council, according to a press release from the Kremlin issued after the two leaders’ conversation.

Next week Vucic will travel to Moscow, where he will meet with Putin and on June 24 attend a military parade organized to mark the 75th anniversary from the victory over fascism in the Second World War.

On the eve of Lavrov’s visit Vucic stated that the fact the Russian foreign minister chose Serbia “for his first foreign visit after the forced interruption caused by the coronavirus pandemic” is “yet another confirmation of the closest friendly relations and the exceptional strategic partnership between Serbia and Russia,” according to a press release from the Serbian President’s Office.
