Dr Fuad Catovic, a deputy to the director of the Health Center in Sjenica, described the epidemiological status in the town as "nearly catastrophic," explaining on July 6 that close to 220 patients having the symptoms of Covid-19 were examined daily in a local covid infirmary.

"Patients with severe symptoms are sent to larger healthcare centers like those in Novi Pazar, Uzice, Prijepolje and Nova Varos, and those with moderate Covid-19 are admitted to the local hospital. At this point 37 patients with moderate and severe symptoms are hospitalized in Sjenica," Dr Catovic said in an interview with Direktno.rs.

The doctor expects that more than 1,000 locals are treated at home. "More than a thousand people are treated at home. We are using a PCR method to test patients suffering severe coronavirus symptoms only, and officially 57 have tested positive, but we are still waiting for a large number of test results," Dr Catovic explained.

"In the mildest possible terms, the situation in Sjenica is nearly catastrophic. The town saw 11 burials on July 3 alone, but not all the deceased were infected. The people are in a state of panic. Early last week 34 people were examined daily in the covid infirmary, but the week behind us saw a surge to 180-220 patients a day," Dr Catovic said, warning that at this point the medical profession didn't have the outbreak in Sjenica under control.
