The Netherlands has closed its borders to the citizens of Serbia and Montenegro a week after it reopened it, as the number of new Covid-19 cases went up in the two states, the embassy in Belgrade reported.

"A decision by the Netherlands to open its borders to residents of Serbia and Montenegro has been reversed. It means that the citizens of the two states cannot enter Holland due to the latest Covid-19 developments," the embassy said in a tweet.

The embassy also explained that the country made the decision because it would do so for all the countries whose epidemiological situation didn't correspond to the EU-average.

The Netherlands reopened its borders to Serbia and Montenegro on July 1, following a recommendation by the European Union to do so, but how the recommendation will be implemented is the sole authority of its member states.
