Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said on July 15 that talks were underway with a state that had not only prepared a vaccine against the novel coronavirus but was using it already for a vulnerable population at home, adding that he expected Serbia to have the vaccine by the end of the year.

During a visit to the construction site of a new Cardiovascular Center in Belgrade, the president said the vaccine "will save Serbia and national economy," but refused to identify the state he had referred to.

Vucic has warned that after three days in which a drop in the number of infections was reported, a new spike occurred, corresponding with protests in Belgrade, Novi Sad and other cities. The president also said he was concerned about Serbian doctors fighting against the virus, adding that no more health facilities in Serbia could be used as Covid-19 hospitals.

President Vucic promised that given the economic consequences of the pandemic, "it won't be easy in Serbia, but it will be better than elsewhere in Europe." "The situation in Serbia is not easy, but it's easier than elsewhere in Europe. Citizens can spend their money as they see fit, salaries and pensions will be paid regularly, not a day late," Vucic said.
