European Commision

The United Opposition of Serbia urged the European Commission on July 23, to include Serbia and other Western Balkans countries in the joint procurement of COVID-19 vaccines, arguing that this way the EU “would prove that it cares equally about the health of everyone living in Europe.”

The United Opposition recalled that there are some 20 million people living in the Western Balkans, and that all of them deserve to receive the same kind of help as the other European citizens.

“This way the EU would show that European solidarity is not reserved only for those living in EU member states, but that it is a value that knows no borders,” the United Opposition of Serbia said in an announcement.

According to the announcement, this is of particular importance for Serbia, as its president, Aleksandar Vucic, had said that the government is “negotiating the procurement of vaccines allegedly tested on a ‘certain population’.”

“There are rumors in the media the vaccines in question are being produced in China. We cannot say anything about the quality of the vaccine, but we believe that the citizens of Serbia, as well as of the entire Western Balkans, should be protected with the same vaccines as all other European citizens,” said the announcement released by the Party of Freedom and Justice, Democratic Party, People’s Party, Movement for Turnabout, Civic Platform, Free Serbia Movement, Serbian State-building Movement, Don’t Let Belgrade D(r)own and Sloga United Trade Unions of Serbia.
