Jeremic: People’s Party Will Be Natural Choice for Majority in Serbia

People’s Party leader Vuk Jeremic has said his party belongs to the healthy and moderate right center, which, according to him, makes it “a natural choice for most citizens of Serbia.”

“After the regime change and the establishing of democracy and the rule of law in Serbia, the People’s Party will become what the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) is in Germany. There [in Germany] the CDU is not part of the government only in extraordinary circumstances, such as, for example, occur when the left’s leadership is assumed by charismatic leaders like Willy Brandt or Gerhard Schroeder,” Jeremic said in Pancevo during a meeting with senior party officials from southern Banat, the party announced on Aug. 24.

Describing the People’s Party as being at the same time both progressive and traditional, custom-abiding and avant-garde, Jeremic pointed out that unlike in the United Kingdom and the U.S., a center-right party in Serbia should work toward a strong welfare state, free education and health care, as well as the protection of workers’ rights.

“Our policy is that the state should boost the economy by protecting and encouraging local entrepreneurs – especially family-owned businesses and small- and medium-size companies whose primary goal will be to expand and open new jobs at home – and not state capitalism or the hiring of so-called ‘professional managers’ to run oversized state companies that have become hotbeds of corruption, partocracy and nepotism,” Jeremic said.
