Cedomir Jovanovic: From the Symbol of Demonstrations to a Disputed Leader

Liberal Democratic Party leader Cedomir Jovanovic said on Aug. 27 that treating the issues of Kosovo and Republika Srpska as equal can only harm Serbia’s interests ahead of important meetings between Belgrade and Pristina officials, regardless of whether the talks are held under the auspices of the U.S. or Europe.

According to Jovanovic’s written statement, Serbia is expected to “reveal its official position” regarding the current issues in Bosnia and Montenegro.

“This [considering these two issues as equal] is something we must not do. Serbia is constantly in a tight corner because of the Serbs across the Drina River but also the Serbs in Montenegro. It is only logical that we should be considerate in our relations with them, but we should not let them involve us into disputes with our neighbors by asking from us to interfere in their internal matters,” Jovanovic said.

According to him, the time has come for the state to take a sterner stance toward Bosnia and Herzegovina Presidency member Milorad Dodik “lest all Serbia’s citizens became hostage to his thoughtless policy.”

Jovanovic added that the time has come for the “Kosovo knot” to be unfastened regardless of the warnings coming from the pro-Serb parties in Montenegro. “Maybe it’s the right moment that we clearly make it known to our regional and international partners that Serbia’s policy is created in Belgrade and not in Banjaluka or the processions in Montenegro. And to do so before it’s too late,” Jovanovic said.
