President Aleksandar Vucic's words that an early parliamentary vote will take place by April 2022 "confirm unambiguously that the election boycott was a success," a vice-president of the People's Party, Miroslav Aleksic, said on Oct. 21.

Aleksic said in a comment for BETA that there had been multiple confirmations that the boycott was a success, but the latest came from Vucic, too. According to the opposition party official, the president is aware that he needs the opposition for proper governance, warning that Serbia is the only state in Europe that doesn't have a legislative opposition.

Aleksic said that the opposition's priority was to secure a level electoral playing field, expecting the European Union to support its efforts. "Vucic can call a new vote in three months, but it won't change anything if it's not a fair one," Aleksic said.

President Vucic, who is also the Serbian Progressive Party leader, said on Oct. 20 that Serbia's new government would be limited in duration, and that the next parliamentary election was taking place by April 3, 2022, together with presidential polls.
