The European Union (EU) will not open any new negotiating chapters with Serbia as democracy has been deteriorating in that country, Viola von Cramon, a member of the European Union (MEP) said on Dec. 4.

"The EU Council and the European Commission won't open new negotiating chapters with Serbia. The state of democracy in Serbia has deteriorated in 2020. Attacks on the media, violence against peaceful protesters and elections are a serious problem. This is not the way to integration with the EU," Von Cramon tweeted.

Aside from her office in the Union's parliament, she is also a member of the EP committee on foreign affairs, the EP's rapporteur for the Western Balkans and a rapporteur for Serbia appointed by the Greens' caucus in the European Parliament.

The Party of Freedom and Justice and Together for Serbia said in two separate press releases that the ruling Serbian Progressive Party was responsible for what Von Cramon had criticized.
