Russia said on Dec. 19 that it would send back an icon from Luhansk that Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov had received as a gift during a visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina, following Ukraine's appeal that the provenance of the icon be verified with the assistance of Interpol.

The chairman of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Milorad Dodik, presented Lavrov with a gold-plated icon from Luhansk, during the foreign minister's recent visit to Bosnia.

The Russian foreign ministry said that the icon would be returned so that its provenance could be verified with Interpol's help.

The Embassy of Ukraine sent a note to the Bosnian foreign ministry, asking for full information about the icon. Ukraine insists the 300-years-old icon is part of the country's cultural heritage.
