Miroslav Lajcak, special representative of the European Union for the Pristina-Belgrade dialog, said on Dec. 27 that the two sides remained far from bringing their positions closer together, but that they were doing "trilateral work on resolving that issue."

In an interview with Pristina Klan Kosova TV, Lajcak spoke about the process that he was mediating and explained his viewpoint on the positions of the two sides, the time frame for signing a final agreement and the conditions that must be met first.

It isn't up to me as a mediator to tell Kosovo or Serbia to do that. Common ground needs to be found so that both sides can find some benefit for their peoples. That is what we are doing at the negotiating table, Lajcak said, adding that a comprehensive agreement could not be reached without discussing status.

Both sides know that and have expressed their positions. However, we must build a common agreement on the other elements of the deal so we can be ready to discuss status, he said.
