One of the BETA news agency's founders and long-standing editor-in-chief of the agency, Dragan Janjic, was buried on Jan. 3 at Belgrade's Orlovaca cemetery.

In the presence of Janjic's family, friends and peers, BETA director Radomir Diklic gave a farewell speech in which he said that his family and the agency were Janjic's two greatest loves and concerns. Diklic recalled that, back in 1994, Janjic and seven of his colleagues launched the BETA news agency "guided by their conscience and with the intent of protecting professional integrity and honesty." Describing Janjic as a model agency journalist, Diklic said that his death was an enormous loss for BETA.

"Janjic was an uncompromising champion of the free word, an advocate of respect for ethics in journalism, as a path to a better tomorrow for all of us. His selflessness, readiness to help young people, and a talent for teamwork will be missed by everyone at the agency. It will take a lot of effort and dedication to fill the void that Dragan's departure has created," Diklic said.

Dragan Janjic died suddenly on December 31, at the age of 65. During his career as a journalist he was a devoted advocate of objectivity and professionalism in reporting and defending the rights and status of journalists and the independent media.
