The Serbian government passed a Conclusion to support Serbia's negotiating position for Chapter XV - Energy, ahead of the next EU-Serbia intergovernmental conference, the Ministry of Mining and Energy reported on June 7.

"Two chief obstacles to opening a chapter on energy have been removed," Minister Zorana Mihajlovic said.

The minister explained that the government passed late in May an action plan to set up and maintain mandatory reserves of crude oil and oil derivatives that had been required, meeting another requirement by passing an action plan for the restructuring of the national gas utility, Srbijagas, the implementation of which would make it possible to separate different operations within the enterprise and harmonize its activities with the acquis and national legislation.

Minister Mihajlovic also said that another important step was made to align domestic laws with EU regulations, as the parliament had passed two new laws - the Law on Use of Renewable Sources of Energy and the Law on Energy Efficiency and Rational Use of Energy, along with amendments to the Energy Law, creating a regulatory framework in line with the relevant EU directives.
