Radio and Television of Serbia (RTS) and Radio Television of Vojvodina (RTV) public services have been working for three months without having managing boards.

According to the Danas daily newspaper of July 12, a meeting of the Regulatory Body for Electronic Media’s (REM) council is scheduled for July 13, with the appointment of members of the two public services’ managing boards on the agenda.

It is, however, “possible” that this time, too, the new managing boards will not be formed, as the decision has been postponed three times so far for a lack of quorum. For a decision to be valid, a two-thirds majority of the REM members is necessary.

“This long delay marginalizes the managing bodies and shows that the program concepts of the public services can be created outside the managing boards,” the paper was told by Judita Popovic, a REM council member.

The Association of Journalists of Serbia and the RTS trade union have demanded from REM to “urgently” appoint the members of the said bodies because “the procrastination [of the decision] undermines the integrity and the functioning of both public services.”

For a position at the RTS managing board 46 candidates have applied, while 16 are vying for the seat on the RTV managing board.
