Serbia's decision to restore its relations with Syria to the ambassadorial level was motivated both by the traditional friendship between the two peoples and countries, and by the changed political and security situation in Syria, which opens broader vistas for developing cooperation, the Vecernje Novosti daily learned from the Foreign Ministry on July 18.

"In making this decision, Serbia took into account the regional and geostrategic significance of Syria and the impact that the development of the situation in Syria, as part of our broader surroundings, has on our region, first of all with regard to illegal migration," the Foreign Ministry said.

The Ministry noted the presence of Serbian citizens in Syria and the need to protect their interests as one important reason for Serbia's diplomatic presence at the highest level.

European Union spokesman Peter Stano recently pointed out that Serbia's decision to reinstate its ambassador to Syria was contrary to Brussels' position and recalled that the path to EU membership included adjusting to its foreign policy.
