Eight people have died of COVID-19 in Serbia in the last 24 hours, bringing the death toll of the epidemic to 7,214, according to an Aug. 22 post on the covid19.rs website.
A total of 1,242 new cases were confirmed in the same time frame, out of 8,101 samples tested. There are 945 patients currently hospitalized with the disease, 31 of whom are on ventilators.
School of Medicine dean Nebojsa Lalic said on Aug. 22 that there "is no dilemma" concerning the necessity of anti-SARS-CoV-2 vaccination, because the epidemic would not stop all by itself.
"What we have done so far is good, but the number of infected is rising, as is hospital bed occupancy and the number of fatalities. The situation is not alarming, but it is alarming from a prevention standpoint, because it won't be good if things continue like this," he told the Serbian Broadcasting Corporation.
