IEP: North Macedonia, Serbia Safest in Western Balkans

North Macedonia is the safest country in the Western Balkans, followed by Serbia, while Kosovo is the least safe, according to results of the survey of the Institute for Economics & Peace – IEP for 2021. 

According to this year's global peace index, Iceland is the safest and Afghanistan the least safe. 

Of the countries of the region, North Macedonia, Serbia, Albania and Montenegro are ranked as "very safe countries," while Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo rank as "medium safe." According to this year's index, the best ranked country in the Western Balkans, North Macedonia, is 40th out of 163 countries, and has moved up 11 points since last year. 

Serbia is 44th, Albania 48th and Montenegro 51st. 

Bosnia is 72nd and Kosovo 80th, in the "medium safe" category. Compared with the previous year, only Serbia and Albania dropped three and two points, respectively, while Montenegro and Bosnia rose three points and Kosovo remained unchanged. 

Of the former Yugoslav republics, only Slovenia is among the 14 countries of the world with the "very high" global peace index, in the 5th place on the global list. Croatia is ranked 17th on the global list as a country with a "high" degree of safety.
