The winners of this year's BETA's Photo of the Year competition received their awards in the evening on Sept. 23, and an exhibition of the best works in the regional contest for best journalistic photograph was opened at Belgrade's Dorcol Platz.

According to the jury, the top prize went to Life Photo agency photojournalist Sanja Knezevic for the photo titled Trapped. This is the third time Knezevic has won the award.

The second prize, for the photograph titled Quarantine, went to Bloomberg Media Distribution photojournalist Oliver Bunic. The third prize went to Bosnian Media Group photojournalist Samir Zahirovic for the photograph called Love. A special audience award went to freelance photojournalist Denis Ruvic for his photograph Haris - the Breza Mine, which had won 3,412 votes on social networks.

As of this year, BETA has also introduced a thematic award for best photograph in the field of life and inclusion of persons with special needs. The newly established award is named after Belgrade actor Damjan Diklic who recently passed away, and the winner is freelance photographer Dragana Udovicic for her photograph Amina in the Sensory Room.

BETA Editor-in-Chief Vojkan Kostic said that the exhibition was taking place for the 18th time and underscored that 72 photographers from nine countries in the region had participated in this year's competition with 308 photographs.

German Ambassador to Serbia Thomas Schieb, whose embassy supported the organization of the contest, pointed out that it was his great pleasure to have been given the opportunity to open the exhibition.

"This year, this important event is taking place for the 18th time and we can rightly say that it has become an institution for the entire region. We received photographs from nine countries of South East Europe and I can only say, if only cooperation at the political level were so easy and so uncomplicated as the case is in culture and art, then it would all be much easier for all of us," said Schieb.

The newly established award named after late actor Damjan Diklic was presented by his sister Jana Diklic, who stressed that with the award they had wanted to give a small contribution to the visibility of special needs persons.

The jury comprised art historian Milena Marjanovic and photographers Nenad Petrovic and Imre Sabo, who chose the winners of the first, second and third prize in the main competition. Visitors of the exhibition will be able to see 44 photographs selected out of the 308 received.
