A lawyer and a former commissioner for public information, Rodoljub Sabic, described as "literary scandalous" a statement by Prime Minister Ana Brnabic that an assassination of the Serbian president had been planned, and that "it was the media that created an atmosphere in which assassinating a president would be a normal thing to do."

"The prime minister's words can in no way conform with a constitutional right to information, or the freedom of the media. It's an irresponsible, doubly harmful act that may seriously upset the public, and also an inadmissible, blatant disregard of all the media outlets and media actors doing their job professionally," Sabic said in an Oct. 25 comment for BETA.

Her  words that "an assassination of the Serbian president was planned, and that it's old news, known to the authorities," but that "no one can be charged right now in the absence of evidence" were reckless and misguided, not very different from rumor, unworthy of a remotely accountable public official, the lawyer said to a BETA journalist.

Sabic has recalled that anywhere else in the world the government should respond to questions and criticism with well-documented facts, instead of lofty disqualifications, warning that it's intolerable that the authorities in Serbia act as if it doesn't apply to them.
